Visit from Dick Powell
Mr. Richard Powell of Fresno, California, founder of the Powell Endowment Fund for Westbury Friends School visited campus in early spring 2010. Dick was accompanied by his nephew, Ron Powell of San Antonio, Texas, and his great niece and nephew Andrea Powell Reichl and George Marc Powell, Ron’s children. This was Dick’s first visit to WFS in over 20 years. Dick shared many experiences and memories with Head of School, Gerri Faivre and Director of Admissions Nancy Aranda, as they toured the campus, visited the classrooms, enjoyed speaking with faculty and students alike and made a special visit to the Westbury Friends Meeting House. While inside, Dick pointed to the bench where his family usually sat and then recalled, with great pride, joy and emotion a memory of his father and grandfather sitting on the Facing Bench one Sunday morning at Meeting for Worship. Mr. Powell has been a strong supporter of Westbury Friends School for many years and his generosity continues today. Soon after his visit to Westbury Friends Dick sent an additional and most exceptional gift to the school of $20,000 at a time when it is most needed. WFS is truly indebted to Dick Powell and the Powell Endowment Fund.
