Board of Managers


Westbury Friends School operates under the care of Westbury Friends Meeting. This care relationship means that the Meeting as a whole participates in the oversight of the School. As there is no clergy in the Religious Society of Friends, this oversight happens within the committee structure of the Meeting.

Each month the Meeting gathers for ‘Meeting for Worship with a concern for Business' at which all committees give reports and ask approval from those gathered for their activities. The Board of Managers of the School is a committee of the Meeting, meaning that the Managers are nominated by the Meeting Nominating Committee, and that the Board reports to the entire Meeting at this Business Meeting.

Several other Meeting committees also take on important roles in the oversight of the School. The Consolidated Buildings and Grounds Committee, which includes representatives of the School, reviews the facilities needs of the entire property and carries out needed repairs and improvements. The Ministry and Oversight Committee offers guidance on issues of Quakerism to the faculty and administration, and defines the role of the Quaker in Residence of the School. The Finance Committee arranges for the insurance covering the School and makes recommendations as to the support offered to the School from the Meeting budget for shared costs, scholarships and annual appeal contributions. Each member of Westbury Friends Meeting takes on some responsibility in the support of Westbury Friends School, for the School, since its original inception by members of the Meeting, has been the primary outreach to the community.

The  volunteer Board of Managers is composed of Quakers, Westbury Friends Alumni, past and current parents and community members.  According to the By-Laws, a majority of the Board must consist of members of the Religious Society of Friends.

The Board is charged with sustaining and furthering the mission of the School, providing for its financial health, stewardship of its assets, and planning for the School’s future.  The Board is responsible for hiring, supporting and evaluating the Head of School, who in turn works closely with the Board, and is responsible for the School’s daily operations. 

The Board meets six times a year, and subcommittees meet more frequently.  The following committees are currently under the oversight of the Board: Committee on Management, Finance Committee, Development Committee, Financial Aid Committee, Religious Life Committee, and Head Support Committee.  The Board also works cooperatively with committees of Westbury Friends Meeting and with members participating on the Consolidated Buildings and Grounds Committee, Finance Committee and Ministry and Oversight Committee.
