African Burial Grounds
Thanks to funds from grant money from the Westbury School District, the WFS faculty, administration and staff traveled into lower Manhattan to visit a very important memorial, *The African Burial Grounds.* While there, we had the opportunity to visit the Burial Ground Monument guided by an exceptional Park Ranger who not only knew all aspects of the African community in New York at that time, but was passionate about this time and the people in history. A visit to the new interactive Visitors Center was both powerful and informative and provided us with comprehensive information about the Burial Grounds and the times leading up to it becoming a National Monument.
The 20-minute film, “ OUR TIME AT LAST” was also an important and most interesting part of the day. This was, as we anticipated, a truly profound shared experience for everyone, as we reflected on all we have learned together about the Underground Railroad over the past year, all that we have studied about Africa in preparation for Theme Week and all the newly acquired knowledge gained from this trip.
