Visual Arts

Philosophy

The Visual Arts program is a sequential curriculum, designed to engage students actively in the process of creating art with hands-on experiences in painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, printmaking, and assembling and manipulating materials.  Varied approaches to learning about art are used, particularly as a way to integrate visual art into all aspects of the school program.  Students view art history prints, visit art museums, study illustrators' art work in children's books.  All of these activities promote discussions about art. Students are introduced to art-related vocabulary, which allows them to be able to compare and contrast among different works of art.

Students learn to work together cooperatively on group projects as well as working independently. They are not only creating art; they are also developing higher level thinking skills, brainstorming ideas for inventing new ways to portray the real and imagined, and taking the time to notice and describe both verbally and visually. Their art work is regularly displayed throughout the school.

In the younger grades art is creative, purposeful and explorative. The process of creation is the focal point, but attention is given to crafting a final product that demonstrates care and an understanding of artistic principles

Intermediate and Upper elementary art focuses on skill attainment. Concepts and ideas are presented in a real context as the children learn about different periods in the history of art. The children's use of artistic endeavors facilitate the understanding of and ability to make decisions and choices, and then to critically evaluate the results.
