The values of individual worth and non-violent
conflict resolution are the cornerstone of a Quaker school.
Beyond our community outreach activities, WFS aims to give each
child a chance to shine within the safe environment of the school.
Acknowledging that each individual learns differently is the
beginning. WFS teachers strive to reach each child where he/she is, and
help students move through the learning process at their own pace.
Education occurs not only in the classroom, but in all areas of the
school. The goal is to create
an independent learner who will find his/her strengths, accommodate the
things that challenge him/her, and come to appreciate a love of learning.
WFS also aims to instill a level of respect for
others through several concrete activities that evolve and spiral up with
the children as they progress from Nursery through Sixth Grade.
Pre-School students are encouraged and supported in their first
steps at learning to count on their peers to help them with simple tasks
like putting on their coats, or in meeting the challenge of a difficult
task like getting a block structure to stay up.
Students throughout their WFS experience are encouraged to listen
to each other respectfully during group meetings in the classroom, to ask
for help from a teacher or a friend, and to rise to the occasion when the
need for an act of kindness makes itself known.
By the time they graduate, WFS students are expected to embody a
respect for themselves and the community they find themselves in.
